It’s a big world, and a bigger Internet, so in response to many readers asking about sources for the products I buy when I can’t grow, forage, or ferment them myself I have assembled this list. It will grow over time, but out of the gate it covers a lot of ground. Apart from the high quality of their offerings, these are also small companies, often family-owned, so your dollars are supporting real, knowledgeable, passionate people—not some faceless corporate juggernaut.

Since the election, a lot of us have given serious thought to where we want our dollars to go in the coming years—who we want to support, and who we want to avoid supporting. Voting with our wallets is not as immediately impactful as voting in elections, but in aggregate and over time it can create significant change. I wish more of the people who canceled their Washington Post subscriptions had canceled their Amazon Prime memberships instead, but at the very least I hope you take advantage of these links to spend your money where it will make a difference.

This list is for paid subscribers, so if you haven’t yet I hope you’ll consider upgrading to a paid subscription for this and other premium content. Hell, I think I deserve a few bucks just for styling, shooting, and editing the product shot up top (and cleaning up my kitchen table afterwards).

Staying home and cooking real food for yourself and your loved ones is a quiet but potent form of activism, given how bad most restaurant food is for us, the workers, and the planet. When you buy from companies like the ones on this list, you can feel even better about your handmade dinner.
